A Nod's As Good As A Wink...To A Blind Horse by Faces

Faces’ ‘A Nod Is As Good As a Wink… to a Blind Horse’ Takes Me Back

Ronnie Lane’s ‘Debris’ is my favorite track on this Faces album. Spinning my old vinyl copy brings back memories of family road trips and early-’70s AM radio.

Hearing a Faces song in the car sent me down a rabbit hole and back to my old copy of A Nod Is As Good As a Wink… to a Blind Horse. I ended up spinning it more than once. For me, it’s their best album.

Released in 1971, it was Faces’ third album. The band shared production duties with Glyn Johns, and the record brings together the rowdy rock songs and quieter moments that make this group so good.

Ronnie Lane’s “Debris” Is the Highlight for Me

“Debris” is my favorite track on the record. Ronnie Lane wrote it and sings lead, and his vocal is one of the things that draws me to it.

The Hit: “Stay With Me”

Of course, the album also includes “Stay With Me,” written by Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood. It’s the band’s best-known hit, but “Debris” is the one I’m most drawn to.

Back to the Family Van and AM Radio

I’ve listened to this album digitally, too, but spinning my old vinyl copy brings something else with it. The cracks and pops are part of the nostalgia. This is a record I love hearing in that format.

It also takes me back to riding around in our family van in the early ’70s, listening to music on the AM radio. Those memories are part of what I bring to this album every time I put it on. Great road music.
